18th Annual Lifeguard Longboard Nationals - Mangawhai Heads - 27th February 2010
The 18th Annual Lifeguard Longboard Nationals were held on Saturday 27th February at Mangawhai Heads. Although wave conditions were far from ideal, the contest went ahead and the surf gradually improved throughout the day. With over 40 entrants across the 5 Divisions, this year was one of the better contests. A strong west coast contingent made the trip across to Mangawhai with teams from Bethells and Karekare, along with a team from Omaha. There was some great surfing action througout the day and when the finals rolled around the crowd were treated to some excellent longboarding.
In the Juniors Ari Tidyman (MHVLS) showed his good local knowledge to take out his opponents. The Womens final was a close battle between Kelly Talbot (MHVLS) and Jess Costello (MHVLS) . Both surfers scored some good long rides, but it was Jess who too it out with a solid left hander scoring highly with the judges. The Masters division has always been a closely contested battle an Graham Darlow(MHVLS) showed his time spent surfing at Mangawhai over summer paid off. In the Classic, it was Tai Flavell(MHVLS) who stole the show late in the fial with a solid nose ride followed by some stylish soul arch turns, with Zane Baker (MHVLS) in 2nd. The Open Mens was a good battle with Eti Eves ( Karekare ) and Zane Baker both surfing some great waves. But it was past winner Tony Baker (MHVLS) who managed to impress the judges taking the 2010 Open Mens title. Thanks to Dave McNiesh and Jess Costello for running such a good event and to all the sponsors who looked after us. And of course to all the surfers who made it for this great event.
