Mangawhai Heads Volunteer Lifeguard Services provides surf rescue services on weekends and public holidays. Volunteers can obtain their Surf Lifeguard Award at the age of 14, which enables them to patrol a beach.
Lifeguards can also obtain various lifesaving awards to up-skill themselves through various programmes and courses run by Surf Life Saving Northern Region. Training is ongoing to maintain a high standard of development for lifeguards at all levels.
A surf lifeguard becomes highly trained in a wide range of skills including:
• Surf Safety
• Rescue Techniques
• Resuscitation
• First Aid
• Radio Operation
• Beach Patrolling
• Competition
Specialist skills will be encouraged in:
• Surf Swimming
• Rescue and Resuscitation
• Inflatable Rescue Boats

• Paddle Boards and Surf Skis
• Instruction and Training of Youth
• Competition Coaching and Judging
